The NSERC PermafrostNet Annual General Meeting 2024

NSERC PermafrostNet is pleased to invite the permafrost community to our sixth network Annual General Meeting (AGM) (previous AGM details available here).

The 2024 NSERC PermafrostNet AGM will be held on Monday 9th of December in Ottawa, at the Shaw Centre, in conjunction with the Arctic Change conference.

The meeting will focus on the synthesis of the research findings the network has made over the last 5 years.

Arctic Change 2024

ArcticNet’s 5th International Arctic Change Conference (AC2024) is a special 20th edition of the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). The conference is a hub for Arctic and northern research in Canada.

The conference will be taking pace December 9 – 12, 2024. The AC2024 brings together researchers from the natural, health, and social sciences to meet the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing Arctic region. This conference will push the boundaries of our collective understanding of the Arctic and strengthen our ability to address the issues of today and tomorrow.

Interdisciplinary cooperation and knowledge sharing, across the Arctic and the North, as well as innovative and evidence-based research, are key in achieving climate change adaptation and proposing sound mitigation strategies. As a hub for Arctic research in Canada, the AC brings together a broad range of research in and about the Arctic and northern regions of Canada and the world. The AC2024 advances our collective understanding with an inclusive view of the North spanning from Inuit Nunangat, across the Canadian territories and provinces, circumpolar Arctic regions, and beyond.

Training session

 Exploring Professional Skills for Permafrost Careers in Canada’s North by NSERC PermafrostNet and CREATE LEAP – OTH55

NSERC PermafrostNet and NSERC CREATE LEAP are combining forces to offer a professional skills training session for those interested in permafrost and science-based careers in Canada’s North. As northern communities witness and experience the accelerating impacts of permafrost thaw on infrastructure and ecosystems, the urgency to grow the workforce of professionals trained to address these challenges grows in tandem. These professionals are called upon to be adaptable to emergent and ongoing issues, able to apply multi-disciplinary solutions, and comfortable engaging and collaborating in a northern context.

This will be a panel session featuring experienced researchers who will provide guidance and advice on how to secure and sustain rewarding careers that aim to improve climate resiliency while fostering collaboration.

Join us as we get a fuller picture about the career options that exist in this industry, and the pathways you can take within it.

NSERC PermafrostNet Northern Travel Fund

DEADLINE: October 31, 2024

Nominate a Northern Indigenous partner or community representative beneficiary to attend the Arctic Change 2024 conference hosted by ArcticNet in Ottawa based on the following criteria.

As a nominator:

You are a recipient of NSERC PermafrostNet funds, or an NSERC PermafrostNet research collaborator, or a member of the NSERC PermafrostNet governance bodies.
You will be presenting or attending as an observer.
You have worked, or are currently working with, Indigenous members of Northern communities on your research project.
You would like the recipient to attend the conference, or NSERC PermafrostNet AGM, to participate in sessions or other meetings related to permafrost.
You do not have the funds in your project budget to pay for their travel to the conference.

If you would like to nominate someone, please send the following nominee information by October 31, 2024:

The nominee’s address.
The nominee’s phone number.
The nominee’s email.
Reasons for nomination e.g., their work or interest in permafrost.
If possible, a short bio of the nominee.
Their role at the conference.
Confirmation they are available and willing to attend Arctic Change 2024.
If they would be able to attend the network AGM.
Indicate whether the nominee has been involved in an NSERC PermafrostNet and/or funded Arctic research project.

Funding is provided through NSERC PermafrostNet from network institutions.

This award has limited funds. Only those approved will be contacted.

NSERC PermafrostNet administers the award but is not responsible for coordinating travel or attendance.

Support for attendance is provided up to a total of $8,000. This includes registration ($535) for the conference, travel, accommodation and per diem expenses. Recipients may also be eligible for an honorarium for the days attending the AGM or conference.

All NSERC PermafrostNet members, collaborators, affiliates and partner organizations are invited to participate.

What sort of sessions and activities are there?

The event will feature research presentations, interactive activities, and breakout sessions to promote networking and group discussions between members of the Canadian permafrost community.
